How many documents can I store?
The Free plan includes 25 documents with unlimited storage. Premium and Household plans offer unlimited documents, always with unlimited storage, plus automatic classification, Expiry Radar, and Serenity Check.
What is a LegaKeep household?
A household is up to 6 people under a single Household subscription (€7.99/mo, that's €1.33 per person). Each member has their own private space. The owner controls who sees what through clear roles: Co-Manager, Family Member. No flat sharing - everyone sees only what concerns them.
What happens if my family situation changes?
Life moves, your vault adapts. Getting married or moving in together? Add your partner as Co-Manager - each person keeps their personal documents and shares what they choose. Divorce or separation? Vault Split cleanly separates documents: each person keeps theirs, shared documents (children's passports, joint insurance) require explicit re-consent from both parties, and the Household subscription converts to two independent Premium subscriptions. Each person independently decides whether to keep the other as an emergency access contact. When a child becomes independent, their private space becomes a standalone Premium vault - no documents are lost.
Who can see my documents?
Nobody. Not us, not the police, not Google. Your documents are encrypted end-to-end with a key only you know. Even our servers only see unreadable data. That's zero-knowledge encryption: we cannot provide what we cannot read.
How does LegaKeep classify my documents without reading them?
LegaKeep uses OCR directly on your device - your phone or your browser. It reads the document text locally, recognizes the type using a keyword dictionary, extracts dates, then encrypts everything before sending. Nothing leaves your device unencrypted.
What if I forget my passphrase?
LegaKeep offers a secure recovery flow through your trusted contact, with a safety delay and identity verification. We can never reset your passphrase ourselves - that’s the guarantee that no one else can access your documents.
What if LegaKeep disappears?
Your documents remain yours. Export is free, always, no conditions. You can download your personal data in JSON format (GDPR) or your entire vault as a ZIP file from your secure space.
What happens if I’m hospitalized or unable to respond?
Your designated trusted contact requests access. You receive 4 notifications (push and email) with a one-tap Refuse button. If you don’t respond within your chosen delay (12 hours to 7 days, 48 hours by default), access is granted automatically to the documents you selected for that person. Prolonged silence is the signal that something is wrong. As soon as you recover, you revoke access immediately - no delay, no waiting.
What happens after my death?
Your contact provides proof (death certificate). All household members are notified and have 48 to 72 hours to contest if they believe the request is illegitimate. If no one contests, your contact accesses the documents you chose - including your sealed documents (Secret Vault). Access lasts for the period you defined (6 to 24 months), then your vault is archived or deleted per your instructions. LegaKeep doesn’t verify the death certificate - your family does, because they know you better than an algorithm.
Can my emergency contact see all my documents?
No. They only see the documents you explicitly placed in their emergency access. Your other documents remain completely invisible. You choose document by document what is accessible, and under what circumstances - incapacity, death, or permanent access.
What is the Serenity Check?
The Serenity Check is a Premium feature that measures and maintains your household’s document coverage. It has three components: the Health Score - a personalized completeness percentage based on your profile (children, homeowner, self-employed...) mapped to the documents a household like yours should have; the Admin Pulse - a monthly digest with seasonal context ("Tax season opens in 3 weeks, your vault is ready"), gaps to fill, and one optional micro-action tap; and the Coverage Badge - which appears quietly after 30 days of full coverage, with no guilt counter. Everything is computed on your device. No data leaves your vault.
Where do the document categories come from?
LegaKeep’s categories are aligned with the official taxonomy from service-public.gouv.fr, the French government website that defines household document types and their retention periods. We added a “Justice” category for legal documents like powers of attorney and court rulings, and split “Identity” from “Family” because in a vault, an ID card and a family booklet don’t have the same sensitivity. Within each category, LegaKeep recognizes over 60 specific document types (ID card, pay slip, rent receipt, etc.).
Why does the generator suggest words instead of random characters?
Because password security depends on the number of possible combinations, not on how complex it looks. Four random French words from a pool of 5,898 represent billions of combinations - as many as a string of special characters, but far easier to remember. It's the same principle as Diceware, used by cybersecurity experts worldwide.
