How many documents can I store?

The Free plan includes a 25-document vault capacity with unlimited storage. The Premium plan offers up to 5,000 documents and the Household plan up to 20,000, always with unlimited storage, plus Serenity Check. Your quota only counts documents stored in the vault: importing and sorting never use it.

How does the Expiry Radar work?

The Expiry Radar scans your vault and tracks the expiry dates of your documents - ID card, driving licence, passport, insurance, contracts. At import, LegaKeep reads and extracts these dates automatically. You get alerts at 90, 30 and 7 days before each deadline. No more last-minute renewals.

What is the Serenity Check?

The Serenity Check is a Premium feature that measures and maintains your household’s document coverage, with three components: the Health Score - a personalized completeness percentage based on your profile (children, homeowner, self-employed...) mapped to the documents a household like yours should have; the Admin Pulse - a monthly digest with seasonal context ("Tax season opens in 3 weeks, your vault is ready"), gaps to fill, and one optional micro-action tap; and the Coverage Badge - which appears quietly after 30 days of full coverage, with no guilt counter. Everything is computed on your device. No data leaves your vault.

Where do the document categories come from?

LegaKeep’s categories are aligned with the official taxonomy from service-public.gouv.fr, the French government website that defines household document types and their retention periods. We added a “Justice” category for legal documents like powers of attorney and court rulings, and split “Identity” from “Family” because in a vault, an ID card and a family booklet don’t have the same sensitivity. Within each category, LegaKeep recognizes over 80 specific document types (ID card, pay slip, rent receipt, etc.).

What if LegaKeep disappears?

Your documents remain yours. Export is free, always, no conditions. You can download your personal data in JSON format (GDPR) or your entire vault as a ZIP file from your secure space.

Who can see my documents?

Nobody. Not us, not the police, not Google. Your documents are encrypted end-to-end with a key only you know. Even our servers only see unreadable data. That's zero-knowledge encryption: we cannot provide what we cannot read.

How does LegaKeep recognize and classify my documents?

LegaKeep lets you choose between two recognition modes:

By default - French AI (Mistral). Your document is read by Mistral, a French artificial intelligence hosted in France, which precisely recognizes its type, dates, and amounts. It never trains on your data, and the copy sent for reading is deleted right after. Your document stays in your vault, encrypted end-to-end. This is the most accurate mode.
On request - 100% local. Nothing leaves your device: recognition happens on the spot, through text reading (OCR) and keyword matching. For anyone who prefers that nothing leaves their device, even to a French AI - at the cost of slightly less precise recognition.

Either way, your vault key always stays on your devices - never with us, never with Mistral. Even if our servers (or Mistral’s) were breached, your documents would remain unreadable. Your documents are encrypted end-to-end, and neither our servers nor the AI retain their content.

What if I forget my passphrase?

LegaKeep offers a secure recovery flow through your trusted contact, with a safety delay and identity verification. We can never reset your passphrase ourselves - that’s the guarantee that no one else can access your documents.

Why does the generator suggest words instead of random characters?

Because password security depends on the number of possible combinations, not on how complex it looks. Four random French words from a pool of 5,898 represent billions of combinations - as many as a string of special characters, but far easier to remember. It's the same principle as Diceware, used by cybersecurity experts worldwide. Learn more →

If zero-knowledge encryption is so secure, why don’t others use it?

Because zero-knowledge encryption would prevent them from working. An HR vault needs to read your documents to automatically receive payslips from your employer. A cloud storage service needs to read your files to index them. Their model relies on accessing your data. LegaKeep was designed differently from the start: classification happens on your device, not on our servers. This architectural choice is what makes zero-knowledge encryption possible - and it’s why the giants can’t simply add it tomorrow. Read the full comparison →

What happens if LegaKeep’s servers are hacked?

Hackers get encrypted files they cannot read. Our servers only contain encrypted blobs - data that is unreadable without your passphrase. And your passphrase is never on our servers. It is computed from your vault key, on your device, every time you log in. Even France’s tax authority (DGFIP) was hacked. The question isn’t whether a breach will happen, but what the hacker gets when it does. With a standard vault, they get your documents. With LegaKeep, they get digital noise. What is a LegaKeep household?

A household includes 4 members under a single Household subscription (€14.40/mo), extensible for a fee. Each member has their own private space. The manager controls who sees what through clear roles: Co-Manager, Family Member. No flat sharing - everyone sees only what concerns them.

What happens if my family situation changes?

Life moves, your vault adapts. Getting married or moving in together? Add your partner as Co-Manager - each person keeps their personal documents and shares what they choose. Divorce or separation? Vault Split cleanly separates documents: each person keeps theirs, shared documents (children's passports, joint insurance) require explicit re-consent from both parties, and the Household subscription converts to two independent Premium subscriptions. Each person independently decides whether to keep the other as an emergency access contact. When a child becomes independent, their private space becomes a standalone Premium vault - no documents are lost.

How do I manage what my children can see in the family vault?

Children are kept out of the sharing decision when you upload a document. That decision can feel permanent, but in reality what your children should see evolves with their age. LegaKeep treats child visibility as a separate setting that you can review and adjust periodically (for example when your child turns 13, or starts high school). You’ll find this setting under Settings > Household.

What happens if I’m hospitalized or unable to respond?

Your designated trusted contact requests access. You receive 4 notifications (push and email) with a one-tap Refuse button. If you don’t respond within your chosen delay (12 hours to 7 days, 48 hours by default), access is granted automatically to the documents you selected for that person. Prolonged silence is the signal that something is wrong. As soon as you recover, you revoke access immediately - no delay, no waiting.

What happens after my death?

Your contact provides proof (death certificate). All household members are notified and have 48 to 72 hours to contest if they believe the request is illegitimate. If no one contests, your contact accesses the documents you chose - including your sealed documents (Secret Vault). Access lasts for the period you defined (6 to 24 months), then your vault is archived or deleted per your instructions. LegaKeep doesn’t verify the death certificate - your family does, because they know you better than an algorithm.

Can my emergency contact see all my documents?

No. They only see the documents you explicitly placed in their emergency access. Your other documents remain completely invisible. You choose document by document what is accessible, and under what circumstances - incapacity, death, or permanent access.
